How to Watch Video on Your PSP - PSP-FAQ

How do you watch video on your PSP? It's pretty easy! You can watch video on your PSP if you have a PC, PSP, and MSDuo with enough capacity (512+MB recommended). All you have to do is convert a video file you already have into a format that is compatible with PSP.

Choose an Encoder

Free or Paid?

Now, we have two different encoding soft wares. One is free and the other is paid.

* For Windows
- Image Converter 2 (Paid, $19.99, officially distributed by Sony)
- KEITAIDOUGAHENKANKUN (3GP_Converter) (Free, distributed by a Japanese developer)

* For Mac OS
- altShiiva (Free)

* Pros and Cons of free soft wares (3GP_Converter, altShiiva)
Pro1: Free!!
Pro2: Available on Mac OS
Con1: WMA is not supported.
Con2: Not supported by Sony.

I recommend 3GP_Converter and the following is a tutorial of it. But if you have no idea what's going on in the following, you should use Image Converter 2 that is an official software and get Sony's support.

Tutorial - How to convert your video with 3GP_Converter

Quicktime

Quicktime must be installed to your PC to operate converting. Please go to Apple.com and get it.

Create a folder (directory)

Create a folder named "100MNV01" in the folder "MP_ROOT" in your MS Duo.
You must input "100MNV01" in CAPITAL letters.

Install & Configure 3GP_Converter

Go to the official site (http://www.nurs.or.jp/~calcium/3gpp/), and download the latest version of 3GP_Converter.
The latest version is 0.34 as of Mar. 16, 2006.
Official Site (3GP_Converter)
After the download, you can dispatch it in any folder you like.

Double-click Setup.exe (not 3GP_Converter.exe) to get it configured.

3GP_Converter Configuation

After you see the window above, select English (,or any one convenient for you) and select "Model: MP4, for PSP (Direct, renamed)" from the upper blank.

Now, Let's Start Encoding!

Please launch 3GP_Converter.exe.
Select the quality setting which you like. (I often use "QVGA/15fps/384kbps Stereo/64kbps")
3GP_Converter Converting

After selecting the quality, drag and drop your movie file into the upper blank. Your movie file is shown like this:
Mpeg file

Check the message saying "Convert successfully finished" and copy the converted files (M4V*****.MP4, M4V*****.THM) to the folder "100MNV01" in your MS Duo. (* is a randomly chosen number)
M4V*****.THM is a file for thumbnail and you don't necessarily copy it.

Sorry, Still Preparing...

FAQ

How can I make a PSP-compatible video file from my DVD?

DVD is encrypted with CSS and you need to decrypt it with the soft wares like DVD Decrypter.
